spe·lunk·ing spəˈləNGkiNG/ noun NORTH AMERICAN the exploration of caves, especially as a hobby. Whenever we go on vacation, we are always up for finding things to do that are not necessarily on most people's to do list. Now, are not really hard core spelunkers, going off into the wilderness to find caves to explore. However, we have discovered there are often cave attractions to be found which provide for some interesting side trips. On our recent vacation to Nashville we found such a place. We decided to take a little day trip north to the great state of Kentucky to visit the Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, KY. I was a beautiful day. We took the tour which included information about the cave and its history and an underground boat ride. There are also many walking trails, where you can see the "Blue Holes" and other sites. On interesting thing was the Butterfly Habitat. Although it was not open for the season yet we did get to meet one of the ladies involved in maintaining it and the surrounding garden. We chatted about gardening and she pointed out the native columbine (Aquilegia Canadensis) which I had never seen. I have columbine growing in my garden but these were red and yellow not purple like mine. She promised to send my some seeds (which she did!) so I could plant them in my garden. One more thing that must be said about the town of Bowling Green, KY is that it is one of the few cities in the country that is home to a species of white squirrel. Now unfortunately we did not get a glimpse of a white squirrel but you can read about them here if you are interested. When we were heading out we decided to find someplace to eat. We came across a fun place called Chaney's Dairy Barn, and yes, it was on a dairy farm. The food was good but the homemade ice cream was fantastic! All in all, we had a very fun time in Bowling Green, KY and I got to cross another state off my bucket list. If you are ever in the area, it is worth the trip.
Have a fun day! Cynthia "Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders." Henry David Thoreau So here is a little update on this years winter sowing project. I planted 16 containers this winter. Of those, 10 grew! Two of the containers I planted contained "mystery seeds" which I collected in my travels but did not write down from where they came or what they were. Of those two, one grew, however, what it is, is still a mystery. I guess I will have to wait until it blooms.
I have decided to keep the other 6 containers going in the hope that something will still grow in them. In gardening, hope springs eternal! Have a fun day! Cynthia "What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade." Gertrude Jekyll The garden is starting to look like summer!
Have a fun day! Cynthia |
