When we sell one of our dresses online, we like to include a small gift. Since it seems that most little girls like to have long hair we thought a pony tail hairband would be the perfect thing!

Here's how we make them.

You will need:

  • Fabric circle approximately 4 inches in diameter
  • Covered pony tail elastic
  • Buttons
  • Needles and thread
  • Embroidery thread

Make a yo yo by stitching around the edge of the fabric circle with your needle and thread.  You don't have to turn the edges under as you would if you were making a quilt because the center will be covered by the button.

When you have stitched all around the circle, pull the thread tight to draw in the edges and knot off your thread.  Smooth it out so your yo yo is flat.

With a needle threaded with your embroidery thread, stitch from the front of the yo yo through the hole to the back.  This way the knot of the embroidery thread is inside.

Loop the thread around the covered elastic and come back to the front through the hole.

Now it's time to add the button.  Sometimes we like to stack 2 different colored buttons.  Make sure the top button is smaller than the bottom button.  Also, it's easier if both buttons have the same number of holes.  You can also use a shank button.  If you use a shank button you can use regular sewing thread.

As you are sewing on the button, make sure you loop your thread around the covered elastic so that you are sewing on the elastic and the button at the same time.  When you are done pass the elastic to the back and knot off.

That's it!
